I’d experienced relationship breakdowns before. I’d felt like my world had fallen apart and thought I’d never recover. This time, I knew I would—but I also knew it would take work.
Healing isn’t a straight line. It’s a process, full of setbacks, breakthroughs, and lessons you never expected to learn.
When Everything Fell Apart
When my long-term relationship ended, I didn’t just lose my partner, my family, as I knew it. I lost my sense of stability, my plans for the future, and a version of myself I had built around that relationship.
At first, I tried to distract myself—to push through. I buried myself in work, in responsibilities, in anything that would keep me from feeling the depth of my grief. But my body wasn’t having it. Anxiety took over. My health declined. My energy was non-existent. I had no choice but to stop and face everything I had been avoiding.
The quiet moments were the hardest. When the noise of distraction faded, all that was left was me—raw, exhausted, and unsure of how to begin again.
Learning To Listen To My Body
For so long, I had ignored the signals my body was sending me. It wasn’t until I experienced severe anxiety and chronic fatigue that I realised: my body had been speaking to me all along. In fact, it had started screaming. I just wasn’t listening.
Eventually, I started paying attention—not just to the pain, but to what helped ease it. I learned that healing didn’t mean snapping back to who I was before. It meant showing up for myself in new, more compassionate ways.
I discovered that the smallest acts of care—a short walk in the sunshine, a nourishing meal, a deep breath—could be powerful medicine. That stillness wasn’t laziness, and rest wasn’t weakness. And that my worth wasn’t tied to my productivity. (This was a hard lesson)
Rebuilding: What Helped Me Heal
These are the things that helped me reclaim my life:
✅ Prioritising my mental and emotional well-being, even when it felt selfish.
✅ Moving my body in ways that felt nourishing instead of punishing.
✅ Choosing self-compassion over self-judgment, allowing myself to feel without shame.
✅ Allowing myself to grieve the past while building a new future.
✅ Surrounding myself with people who truly saw me, valued me, and held space for me to grow.
Don’t get me wrong—it certainly wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen overnight. But once I realised my body was trying to tell me something, and I quietened enough to be more open to hear, things gradually became easier. My pain began to reduce. My energy slowly returned. And in its place came a sense of groundedness that I hadn’t known in years.
Your Healing Journey
Healing is not about going back to who you were. It’s about becoming who you are meant to be. It’s about learning to trust yourself again—and remembering that even in the most uncertain moments, there is a part of you that already knows how to heal.
You don’t have to do it alone.
